Case of 12
Grape varieties: Sangiovese, Gamay del Trasimeno, Canaiolo
Ratings/Awards: Migliori Vini Italiani di Luca Maroni 90 Points
Description: Pale onion-skin in colour, with aromas of flowers, strawberries and citrus fruits. It is savoury and smooth on the palate, complex yet with a lean body and good length. A beautifully pleasant wine to sip and pair.
Note: Story behind the wine: The Podere Marella Grechetto vines were getting old and sparse ..quantity had dwindled to very low yields.. a replanting was in order..white wine production would then decline to even less.
Podere Marella turned their minds to how to make up for this loss.. The idea of making a rosé had been in the air for sometime, the idea kindled by their long time friend and colleague famous French oenologist Jean Natoli, and there were the market trends showing that demand for rosé was on the rise. All the same, the Podere Marella family not being fans of the ‘pink stuff’ had resisted the idea but the situation had changed quite significantly .. So, they rather reluctantly set out to create a rosé that should be ‘in their minds’ the best expression of their terroir and local grape varieties ... Not like the rosés they detested but a ‘a wine without makeup’.
And so.. the Podere Marella Trasimeno Rosato was born. A blend of Sangiovese, the very local Gamay del Trasimeno (which is not Gamay at all!) and a touch of Merlot.. The grapes gently pressed before the skins are removed yielding a pale onion skin colour reminiscent of the rosés of Provence. Beguiling and disarming at the same time..
This at first unwanted child quickly became a much beloved..
