Il Bocale Montefalco Sagrantino Passito DOCG 2016 (Case of 6)
Full bodied/ Rare Grape/ Oak barrel/ Organic/ Vegan
Case of 6 (375 ml)
Grape variety: Sagrantino, the native grape variety of this small and special region.
Reviews/Ratings: Wine Align 95 Points: John Szabo MS “A passito (dried grape) style wine made from the notoriously tannic sagrantino variety indigenous to Umbria, the reliable house of Bocale has rendered an impressive version from the excellent 2016 vintage, a palatable tug of war of sweet and sour, fresh and dried, thick and structured, intensely flavoured, tonic and refreshing - a veritable tour de force. It's hard to imagine stuffing more concentration and intensity into this 375ml bottle, being sweet up front but finishing drier than most dry vermouths. Indeed, I'd be inclined to serve this with savoury courses like roast lamb or beef, or slow braised variations of the same. It's closer to Amarone in style than desert wine, and, well, excellent, if not a tipple for everyday. Happily, somebody has spent the effort to keep such rare wine styles alive and well. Drink now-2040 - I can't imagine how this could really slip far past prime, it seems timeless.”
Description: Full bodied sweet wine. Deep ruby red in colour with light violet tinge.
On the nose, blackberries, currants and maquis, mingling with notes of spice and vanilla.
On the palate, well structured with smooth tannins, and lengthy finish typical of the variety.
A meditation wine, it’s excellent if accompanied with ripe cheese, dried fruits and sweets or chocolate.
